the stunning sounds of nature by takagi masakatsu 🎹
As a musician, there are certain artists that you don’t just listen to, you
absorb them.
They become part of you, changing the way you perceive music and how you express emotions. Takagi Masakatsu is one of those artists for me ✨
He represents home, breath, relief.
His compositions are open windows into a universe of light, organic sounds and intimacy, where time seems to flow at a different pace ✨
It’s hard to put into words what Takagi’s music makes me feel.
Among his most famous works, the Wolf Children soundtrack holds a special place.
Mamoru Hosoda’s film is a visual poem about growth, maternal love, and the connection with nature, and Takagi’s music amplifies every emotion within it.
Tracks like Oyoste Aina and Kito Kito - Dance of Your Nature capture the essence of a world where humanity and nature intertwine in a single breath.
The delicate piano, the soft strings, and the everyday sounds create an atmosphere that embraces you like a summer breeze 🌞
But if Wolf Children allowed his music to reach a wider audience, it is in albums like Kagayaki that Takagi’s purest soul is revealed.
What makes his music truly unique is the way he integrates the sounds of the real world into his compositions.
The Marginalia project, which began in 2018, is a perfect example of this philosophy: piano improvisations recorded with open windows, letting in the chirping of birds, the rustling of leaves, the heartbeat of time passing 🌼
Takagi Masakatsu has influenced me so much, more than I initially realized.
When I was working on Cherish Life, I noticed just how much his approach to composing had shaped mine 🎼
The use of ambient sounds, the delicately processed pianos, the melodies that don’t seek to be the protagonist but simply exist within the space, these elements naturally found their way into my music.
Takagi Masakatsu has also had a huge impact on other artists, including Porter Robinson.
Porter's 2021 album Nurture reflects many of the ideas Takagi brought into his music: the use of field recordings, the intimately played piano, the desire to create a connection between music and the real world.
If you’ve never listened to Takagi Masakatsu and want to start, here are a few recommendations:

He represents home, breath, relief.
His music is what I always put on when traveling by train, as the landscape
flows past and my thoughts unravel one by one 🌤️
There have been days when his music was the only thing that could truly ease my anxiety, especially during panic attacks.

There’s something about his sounds, the natural way he allows the world to
enter his recordings, that has always given me a sense of calm, as if telling
me that everything is exactly as it should be ❤️

His melodies feel like paintings, built with sounds that whisper stories
without the need for words 🌿

But if Wolf Children allowed his music to reach a wider audience, it is in albums like Kagayaki that Takagi’s purest soul is revealed.
Recorded in a small mountain village, the album is a sonic diary of lived
moments: the sound of the wind through the trees, the distant chime of a bell,
the voices of villagers blending into the melodies.
Kagayaki is an album to be listened to without haste, letting yourself be carried away and immersed in its rural imagery 🌊

Porter's 2021 album Nurture reflects many of the ideas Takagi brought into his music: the use of field recordings, the intimately played piano, the desire to create a connection between music and the real world.
But what’s most fascinating is how Porter reinterpreted this aesthetic,
blending it with electronic elements and his personal vision of music.
The result is an album that conveys the same sensitivity as Takagi’s work, but
with a different energy, one closer to dreams and hope ✨
